Is your Microwave leaking harmful radiation?
LMTS PAT Testing offers a microwave oven leakage and safety testing service to compliment our portable appliance testing service, which can be carried out at the same time as your PAT testing. We are able to test both domestic and industrial microwaves.
Microwave ovens provide a convenient and safe way of cooking food in the workplace, however faults can occur and unless periodically tested they may become a health and safety hazard without you being aware.
Lack of sanitation and poor maintenance of the door seals can lead to leakage levels in excess of the recommended limit. Testing of the unit involve measurement of the radiation levels around the oven using microwave detection equipment to ensure compliance with legal limits.
The safety interlock switches and the door seals are inspected for any signs of damage to ensure that they function correctly and safety.
Microwave oven testing is done to comply with the following standards:
BS EN 60335-2-90 2006 Safety of Household Electrical Appliances
BS EN 60335-2-25 2002 Requirements for Microwave Ovens
Microwave radiation is both odorless and invisible. Leakage can be caused by slamming the oven door, leaving food particles in the hinges or seals and moving the oven around etc.
A radiation intensity of only 5mw/cm2 is classed as being harmful, regular testing enables the identification of defective leaking microwave ovens.
Checks You Can Be Doing Yourself…
Although not a legal requirement regular visual checks should be carried out on microwave ovens:
Is it clean? Often users forget to wipe down the insides and door of a microwave after it’s been used. As well as obvious build up of food particles it can also build within less obvious places such as the ventilation grills.
Does the door close properly? If it is damaged or has loose hinges, or if the seals are cracked or broken it may appear safe but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is.
